A Perfect Balance: Sam McWhorter’s newfound balance between fitness, class and social life

09.25.2019

Sam McWhorter is one of our CrossFit members who is balancing being a full-time student, his social life and keeping a consistent and healthy workout routine. Find out exactly how he does it and learn a little bit more about Sam below.

When and why did you join Nexus?

I joined Nexus in January of 2019. I wanted to do CrossFit to help develop my all-around fitness and try something new. I used to be an athlete in college and wanted to try a new way of working out. I immediately fell in love with Nexus after my first free class with Ben.

What is your favorite thing about Nexus?

The best part about Nexus is the people. The members and trainers make Nexus feel like a home. I love how Nexus provides such a fun atmosphere and community in fitness. I have made a ton of new friends through Nexus that I hang out with continuously outside the gym. Nexus is not just a place to work out for me. I spend time there hanging with friends from my classes, the trainers, or simply working on my weaknesses in fitness.

Do you do Nexus Health? If so, why?

I am currently doing my free trials of Nexus Health. Healthy eating has been hard for me while still in college. I am attempting to get better at it to improve my overall health, fitness, and lifestyle with the help of Nexus Health.

How has your life been impacted since joining Nexus?

My overall lifestyle has improved since joining Nexus. I look forward to working out every day and being in that community as much as possible. Whenever I go back home, vacation, or away from Nexus, I can’t wait to get back. Nexus makes me want to be the best version of myself by getting in my workouts as much as possible.

What goals have you achieved since starting Nexus?

Right when I joined Nexus, I did the CrossFit Open. Something I could have never imagined doing right away in my stage of fitness. I have learned new movements such as muscle-ups, double-unders, and have conquered personal best in many lifts.

What class do you typically go to / do you stick to a routine? If you go to a specific class each day, what do you like about it? Why do you consistently go to that?

During my first 5 months at Nexus, I was consistent in going to the 4 o’clock class. My favorite part of the class was the “4 o’clock clowns” consisting of members Sam Sellers, Scott Bruner, and myself. During the summer and right now, my class times vary because of class and school, but all classes are filled with great people and the trainers are always the best.

How have the people at Nexus helped motivate / encourage you?

The trainers have constantly encouraged and motivated me in every aspect of my fitness journey. I have never questioned anything Ben or Jake has suggested for me, such as RX exercise or weights, and so far, it has worked out very well. Ben and Jake have constantly encouraged me to try new things, work on weaknesses, and help create the best version of myself.

What has been the hardest part of Nexus? The most surprising?

The hardest part for me is being consistent. Between school, work, and traveling, finding a time to get in can be tough. There is something about Nexus that makes me want to come in every day. The atmosphere and community are so fun and there is nothing better than leaving a workout feeling like you accomplished something.

What advice would you give to people trying to get into a steady routine and maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Don’t make excuses and be consistent. Wake up and find a way to get in your workout throughout the day. I’ve spent plenty of days regretting not working out or giving it my all. Even on the days you don’t feel like working out, just show up to Nexus, get after it and you won’t regret it after the workout.

What are you most proud of after this experience? What does living a healthier lifestyle mean to you?

I am most proud of the mindset Nexus and CrossFit has provided me with. CrossFit pushes your limits and body in every workout. It also makes you mentally tough allowing you to accomplish things inside and outside the gym that you never thought you could accomplish. Living a healthier lifestyle means taking care of your body and mind which helps with everyday living. On good or bad days, working out, especially at Nexus, will immediately increase my mood and overall vibe.

Why do you think it is important to share your story with others in the Nexus community?

I think it’s important to share my story because Nexus is a special place. It’s the perfect mix of people in all stages of life. It’s a community I look forward to going to every day and am proud to be a part of. If you’re looking to improve your fitness, live a healthier lifestyle, while making some awesome new friends, Nexus is the place to be.
